AVID Program

Welcome to
Chandler High School's AVID page.

AVID stands for "Advancement Via Individual Determination."
The AVID concept was developed in California by Mary Catherine Swanson in the early 1980s.

The AVID program was piloted for our district by Bogle JHS and Hamilton HS in 2005. Chandler High instituted its first AVID class in 2006. In 2007, enrollment in AVID tripled and doubled again for 2008, and has grown steadily each year.

AVID at Chandler High is considered both a  9-12 college-prep elective class and a school-wide set of research-based instructional practices to improve success for all students.  AVID students are capable of completing a college-prep curriculum and have a strong desire to attend college. The AVID curriculum is designed to help students fulfill their potential; academic instruction, tutorial support, and motivational activities help keep each student on track.

Students apply to be interviewed for the program and, if selected, choose AVID for one of their elective classes each year.

AVID students conduct Socratic tutorials every week, engage in a rigorous AVID curriculum (includes: Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, and Reading), and participate in both college visits and team building.

For further information on the AVID program, please visit www.AVID.org.

AVID exists at Chandler High to promote academics and interest in attending college through field trips, college-based activities, and community service.

There is no cost for the AVID program and there is an AVID Club that all AVID students are encouraged to join. Meetings will be held once/month; the club sponsor is Mrs. Heather Dyke

Want to make a tax credit donation to AVID? We use those monies to help us pay for the transportation for our college visits and our end of the year AVID celebration and senior recognition event
