IB Program

Background of the CHS IB Program

Only schools officially approved by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) are authorized to offer the curriculum and to present candidates for examination. Chandler High School was the first school in Arizona to be selected as an IB School because of the caliber of IB Instructors who are specialists in their subject area.

CHS has a 92% success rate in our candidates earning the prestigious IB Diploma. This percentage may vary, but candidates consistently return from their university of choice reflecting that the level of rigor, the intensity and distinguished instruction by our IB teachers, and the total support by the CUSD School Board, our Superintendent and District Administrators, our Principal, and Assistant Principals, Counselors, and staff create an atmosphere of empowerment to perform at their optimum level.

The IB Program is now being offered at 3,083 schools in over 139 countries throughout the world. There are over 880,000 students participating in the IB Program in North America. Significant numbers of IB Diploma recipients have been accepted to prestigious universities throughout the nation. Chandler High School is proud of all our students and especially honored to have consistent FLINN scholarship winners, National Merit Scholars, Baird Scholarship winners, Academy appointments, Ivy League university graduates and numerous prestigious corporations recognizing our candidates with awards.

The International Baccalaureate headquarters is based in Geneva, Switzerland, with administrative offices in London, Maryland, Buenos Aires and Singapore. The Examination’s Office, located at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom, oversees two examination sessions per year, November and May. The May session serves the large majority of candidates; schools in the Southern Hemisphere subscribe to the smaller November session. Some 4,000 individual examiners worldwide participate in the assessment of student work.

Upon the request of the IB Candidate, a final, official IB transcript will be sent to the universities of their choice by the International Baccalaureate of North America (IBNA) regional office. The document will indicate the IB subject the Candidate tested, the score earned on the HL or SL exams taken, the total point score, and if the three additional requirement categories were completed with satisfactorily. Results become available in late July for each May session candidate, which each may access with a confidential password in the official IB site.

IB candidates are required to pay the costs of the IB exams ordered by CHS. We encourage families to consider participating in the Arizona School Tax Credit Program while the student is attending CHS.

Why IB?

Imagine a worldwide community of schools, educators and students with a shared mission to empower young people with the values, knowledge and skills to create a better and more peaceful world. This is the International Baccalaureate (IB).

IB programmes aim to provide an education that enables students to make sense of the complexities of the world around them, as well as equipping them with the skills and dispositions needed for taking responsible action for the future. They provide an education that crosses disciplinary, cultural, national and geographical boundaries, and that champions critical engagement, stimulating ideas and meaningful relationships.

The first IB programme, the Diploma Programme (DP), was established in 1968. It sought to provide a challenging yet balanced education that would facilitate geographical mobility by providing an internationally recognized university-entrance qualification, but that would also serve the deeper purpose of promoting intercultural understanding and respect.

With the introduction of the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in 1994 and the Primary Years Programme (PYP) in 1997, the IB identified a continuum of international education for students aged 3 to 19. The introduction of the Career-related Programme (CP) in 2012 enriched this continuum by providing a choice of international education pathways for 16- to 19-year-old students.

These three IB programmes can be implemented independently or in combination. They are all underpinned by shared values and a shared emphasis on developing students who are lifelong learners and who are able to not only make sense of, but to make a positive impact on, our complex and interconnected world. These aspirations are summed up in the IB’s ambitious mission.

"The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.   To this end the organization works with schools, governments  and international organizations to develop challenging programmes of international education and rigorous assessment.  These programmes encourage students across the world to become active, compassionate and lifelong learners who understand that other people, with their differences, can also be right."

Written primarily for educators, "What is an IB education?" provides an overview and explanation of our educational philosophy. It explains how our mission and philosophy shape and drive our programmes. To do so, it explores four foundational and interrelated elements that are central to all IB programmes.

           1. International-mindedness

           2. The IB learner profile

           3. A broad, balanced, conceptual and connected curriculum

           4. Approaches to teaching and learning
